Carr House Farm in the Yorkshire Wolds is home to the Side Oven Bakery and the Sellers family, sixth generation farmers. The family made the switch to organic farming 15 years ago and the bakery started up soon after. The family’s’ passion for provenance, knowing where your food comes from and how it is produced, led to the bakery producing quality products using ingredients grown on the farm.
Their organic flour is stoneground, an ancient tradition. Using stones to grind wheat is a much gentler method than mass-produced, industrial ways leaving more of the wheat germ intact. This adds flavour to the flour and means important nutrients are not lost in the process.
Award winning granola (Great Taste Award 2015) contains homegrown oats and spelt wheat flour. The granola is toasted gradually in honey in a wood burning oven on site using fallen timber from the farm. Award winning apple juice (best non-alcoholic drink, East Yorkshire Local Food Network and Beverley Food Festival 2009) is made with apples from their organic orchard pressed using a traditional apple press on the farm.
Daughter Jessica says “When you start to look for local produce there are some real gems, particularly in Yorkshire. We are constantly improving recipes and launching new products or flavours to our range. We recently launched our new organic ginger with lemon cordial, made using water from a natural spring on the farm. The cordial has a lovely depth of flavour and the ginger warms and soothes. It’s delicious hot or cold!”
“We are a small family business employing several people from the local area and we’re grateful to everyone who supports local food producers.”
